◎ Before You Begin¶
At some point, every programmer — regardless of age, experience, or the language they are writing in — has stared at a screen and thought: I did not change anything. Why is it broken?
Or perhaps the more familiar version: the program ran perfectly five minutes ago. Now it does not. The error message makes no sense. The highlighted line looks fine. And the instinct — the very human instinct — is to either start changing things randomly and hope for the best, or to reach for help before fully reading what the system has already told you.
This guide exists because that moment does not have to be a crisis. It can be a process.
◎ Why This Guide Was Written¶
Programming is taught in classrooms, but debugging is often learned in isolation — through frustration, through trial and error, through eventually finding the right answer on a forum without fully understanding why it worked. Students write code. They get errors. Nobody has explicitly shown them how to read those errors, how to interpret the output window, or how to systematically narrow down what went wrong.
This became especially visible with the arrival of AI tools integrated directly into development environments. Students began taking screenshots of entire screens and sending them to AI chat windows — no question, no context, no error text. Or copying and pasting broken code with nothing more than "fix this." The AI would respond with something, the student would try it, sometimes it worked, and the student learned nothing. When the next bug appeared — and it always does — they were no further along than before.
The deeper issue is not laziness. It is that nobody taught them that error messages are sentences worth reading, that output windows are conversations, and that debugging is a skill that can be learned, practised, and improved — just like writing code itself.
AI has not removed the need for debugging skills. It has exposed their absence.
This guide is the response to that observation.
◎ What This Guide Is¶
This is a practical, progressive guide to debugging software. It is not a textbook. It is not tied to a single language or IDE. It does not assume you are in a particular year of study or that you have already mastered a particular framework.
It teaches debugging as a transferable skill — one built on understanding how systems communicate, how to read what they tell you, and how to reason systematically toward a solution.
The guide is organised by debugging maturity, moving from foundational habits through to professional practice. You do not need to read it from start to finish. Find the section that matches where you are right now, and start there.
◎ Who This Guide Is For¶
If you are a high school student (Grade 10–12) encountering your first compilation errors, confused by what the IDE is highlighting, or unsure why your program is not running — start with 01 · Foundations. The concepts introduced there will serve you for the rest of your programming life.

◎ A Note on AI Tools¶
AI tools — GitHub Copilot, Gemini in Android Studio, Claude, ChatGPT, and the many others integrated directly into modern development environments — are genuinely useful. They can explain error messages, suggest fixes, generate code, and point you toward solutions you might not have found on your own.
But they are collaborators, not replacements for understanding. A fix you cannot explain is not a fix. When the next version of the bug appears — and it will — you will be no better equipped to handle it than you were before.
This guide will show you how to use AI tools as part of a debugging process — how to ask them the right questions, how to verify what they suggest, and how to remain in control of your own code. That begins with understanding the error yourself before you hand it to anything or anyone else.

The computer is not wrong. It is doing exactly what it was told to do. An error means something about your instructions was unclear, incomplete, or incorrect.
Errors are not punishment. They are feedback. The system is trying to tell you something. This guide teaches you how to listen.
